Script Consulting

I offer script consulting for film and TV scripts at any stage of development. I am very analytical, inspiring and good with classical structures. My background in European cinema and in international workshops, also as a mentor, allows me to go deeper than your usual plot points and three-act-simplifications. I have been a creative writer for more than 20 years and I know what writers need and how to help them.

Whether you are a production company looking for a long-term dramaturgist to a film project going soon into production - or stuck in development - or a screenwriter in need of feedback, I'm your choice. I work in both Finnish and English.

Directing

At the moment my work as a film director is focused on projects in development with Aamu Filmcompany, but I am interested in directing for television. Both my previous films (Tiikeri, 2018, and The Woodcutter Story, 2022) premiered in Cannes Film Festival Critic's Week Competition and have been sold to several territories. The Woodcutter Story also won the Gan Foundation award in Cannes for French distribution. I am a versatile and very visual director, as noted both in Cannes Critic's Week selection statement and in reviews. I am not limited to any style or genre, but I am most comfortable with any thriller or dark comedy elements.

Some excerpts from The Woodcutter Story reviews:

"- -Metsurin tarina tuntuu omalta ainutlaatuiselta elokuvaltaan. Jo se on kutkuttavaa, kuinka suomalaiset kurjuuskliseet yhdistyvät täysin surrealistisiin elementteihin. Kala puhuu, putkitelevision ruudulta pamahtaa ilmoille leijuva pallosalama, pikkupoika (- -) filosofoi kuin Jean-Paul Sartre.

- -Visuaalisena ohjaajana Myllylahti vaikuttaa olevan jo priimaluokkaa. Asetelmat ovat hienoja ja harkittuja."

-Juho Typpö, HS

"This is social comedy as written by Kierkegaard.(- -) I love Myllylahti’s cavalier boldness. He’s seen a vivid, peculiar story and just gone for it. He’s one to watch."

-Stephanie Bunbury, Deadline

"One thing that can be fairly said about The Woodcutter Story is that it’s not remotely predictable. The consistent element is Myllylahti’s delicate register of muted, comic surrealism, sustained from the start."

-Jonathan Romney, Screen Daily

"Sudden bouts of violence and never-explained mysteries echo David Lynch a little – if he were to suddenly find himself in Finland, which definitely should happen – and make The Woodcutter Story a surprisingly haunting proposition."

-Marta Balaga, Cineuropa

Screenwriting

I'm open to work in film and tv projects as a screenwriter. I have written two internationally acknowledged feature films that both won a prize in Cannes Film Festival and currently I have several projects in development, both in Finland and abroad, but I am always interested in new projects. I work in Finnish and English
